Today my life in long-term recovery is powerful. I grew up in a very dysfunctional home. My dad was a controlling alcoholic and the family suffered from this. I started using when I was 12 years old. I skipped reality when I used.

I was in and out of recovery centers for years, yet this last time a miracle happened for me. I really took in what was taught and now I try to use this in all areas in my life. This is why I feel like today I apply the principles of the program in all my affairs.

Today I have friends in Recovery who care for me and help me when I do need to share my thoughts. Working with a sponsor has given me the tools to have serenity in my days. I give back to others in early recovery by sharing my experience, strength and hope.

Thank you very much Dave at The Powell House, and all the counselors at Recovery Now for helping me continue my foundation built on Recovery!

I am 51 years old and I have spent most of my life in prison or rehabs. I was unable to be a dad or a husband nor a son or brother. I was unable to play my part in the lives of my family. I gave up on everything including love for myself and my loved ones. I tried several times to get clean and the result continued to be the same. I was unable to even get 4 months clean until I came to Louisville, Kentucky from Ohio.

I have been here working on 3 years clean and sober. Part of my support group is David and Mary Beth Mattingly, directors of the Powell Sober Living House. While staying at the Powell House, I was introduced to Intensive Outpatient Therapy (IOP) for substance abuse. IOP gave me the opportunity to build a solid recovery foundation and motivated me to become more involved in making sure I sustain long-term recovery.

As a result, I now mentor, offer support to residents at the Powell House, and I am in the process of becoming a state certified Peer Support Specialist. Thanks to God I have broke the chains of addiction and I am able to help so many others who are suffering from the disease. Today, I am the kind of son, friend, and brother that I’ve always wanted to be. I am someone who is accountable and responsible that people can depend on.
